This motivational tribute was presented by Kojo Adeyemo Annan at the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), 2018. The tribute x-rayed the life of the former United Nation Secretary General, late Kofi Annan, who also doubles as his father.
Among many other encomium and accolades, it is striking to note that the former Secretary General was born in Ghana’s second largest city- Kumasi. He never left his country before he was 18 years old. With his sheer determination and beliefs, he was able to rise above stereotype and pushed his limits.
After graduating from Kwame Nkrumah Univertsity of Science and Technology, Annan went on to study economics at Macalester College. Also international relations from the Graduate Institute Geneva and management at MIT. He joined the UN in 1962, working for the World Health Organization‘s Geneva office. He went on to work in several capacities at the UN Headquarters including serving as the Under-Secretary General for peacekeeping between March 1992 and December 1996. Kofi became the Secretary-General on 13 December 1996. This made him the first office holder elected from the UN staff itself- security counsel. He was re-elected for a second term in 2001, and was succeeded as Secretary-General by Ban Ki-moon on 1 January 2007.
His trademark as a global citizen is really encompassing hence the whole world celebrates him today! He stood for- equality and equal opportunities for all!
Sometimes, our background tend to hinder us from making a headway in life. We lurk around, hovering on the cloud of impossibilities. Research shows that impossibilities only exist in the human minds. It takes determination, courage and discipline for one to break that boundary and limitations.
Next time that voice comes to tell you that you can’t make it, just reply: “If Kofi Annan could, YES I can and will!”
Stay motivated! Stay positive!
